Health Care in Brazil

Health Care in Brazil The Brazilian healthcare system is mixed and it is divided in two systems that are segmented according of the origin of their resources: Public and Private.

The Public System is divided in two: the first is free and has universal access (for all citizens) and is financed by the government, it is named Unified Health System (UHS). The second is only for government officials (civil and military) and is financed by the government and by the employee’s contributions.

The Private System is also divided in two: The first one has some health plans and health insurance, called Complementary System, it is self-inflicted and non-mandatory; it is financed by employer’s and employee’s resources (in collective agreement) or by families. The second one provides health services directly from private providers.

The biggest health problem for which there is no preventive treatment is The Dengue Fever; it is transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito. Recently, there have been several virus outbreaks in the areas of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. The symptoms of dengue include high fever, headache and muscle pain, nausea and vomiting. Sometimes red spots appear in the body three or four days after the fever has started.

As there is no vaccine against the dengue, the advice that is given to everyone is to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes and get away from places with stagnant water because that is where the mosquito lives.

Vaccination against yellow fever and anti-malaria could be necessary if you are traveling to central-western (Mato Grosso) or northern (Amazon) regions. If you're arriving from Peru, Colombia or Bolivia, the vaccination for yellow fever is required. Some countries, such as Australia and South Africa, will require evidence of yellow fever vaccination before allowing entry to their countries.
