LiberdadeOne of the city's older neighborhoods, Liberdade got its name after the 1888 abolition of slavery when the neighborhood's main square, which had once had the official city whipping post or pelourinho, was renamed Praça da Liberdade. Italians were the first immigrant group to settle here, but as they moved into other neighborhoods Japanese immigrants gradually moved in. The best way to experience the area is to get off at the Liberdade Metrô stop and take a stroll down Rua Galvão Bueno. In addition to pretty Japanese lamp standards, the street boasts an infinitude of mineral shops and some great sushi restaurants, as well as Japanese faces everywhere. Now very proud of its Asian heritage, Liberdade celebrates it with an excellent Museum of Japanese Immigration and a popular Sunday market on the Liberdade square. Explore São Paulo
