Goiás and Tocantins

The capital of Tocantins, PALMAS lies just under 1000km north of Brasília and just over 1200km south of Belém. The town itself, with a population of some 90,000, is inconveniently set back on the banks of the Rio Tocantins, some 150km by minor roads from the main Brasília–Belém highway BR-153. A good hotel is the Rio do Sono, ACSUSO 10, conj. 1, Lote 10 (tel & fax 063/215-1733; $50–70), with nice bright rooms and a pool. Slightly cheaper, but also with a pool, is Casa Grande, Av. Joaquim Teotônio Sugurado, ACSUSO 20, conj. 1, Lote 1 (tel & fax 063/215-1813; $35–50).
