At the Southwest of Avenida Afonso Pena, are the hilly tree-lined roads of Funcionários , a neighbourhood dominated by government offices of all sorts. The district also contains the Catedral da Boa Viagem , Rua Alagoas (Mon & Tues, Thurs-Sat 7-11am & 3-8pm, Wed 7am-8pm, Sun and holidays 7am-noon & 3-8pm), inaugurated in 1922 to mark the 100th anniversary of Brazilian independence. For a cathedral of a major city, the neo-Gothic structure is surprisingly small and plain, but the grounds are beautiful.
